12V Power in Your BYD Shark 6, DENZA B5 and B8. – Always On, Always Ready
The BYD Shark 6 doesn’t include factory-fitted 12V outlets in the tub, so we’ve made a kit with a proven solution: a tested, real-world, that stays on all the time — even when the vehicle is turned off and locked as demonstrated below in the video, except now we can also supply this to your trailer for caravan charging or Auxiliary 12v power requirements via 50A Anderson connection.
How It Works
The Shark runs both a high-voltage (traction) battery and a low-voltage system. A built-in DC-DC converter continually keeps the 12V battery charged, and importantly, this charging continues even when the vehicle is off or locked — as long as the high-voltage battery remains above ~20% state of charge.
This kit supports load of up to 50A for caravan/camper/trailer/external fridge connection.
Realistic Runtime Expectations
For those not familiar with electrical systems, here’s an easy rule of thumb:
-
With a full high-voltage battery, the Shark can run a medium-sized 12V fridge for up to ~30 days without driving, charging, or running its petrol generator (assuming a normal 30–50% fridge duty cycle).
-
In more realistic scenarios — for example, parking with 50% traction battery — you can expect around 7 days of fridge runtime before the system reaches the Shark’s 20% limit.
-
If the battery does drop too low, the Shark will automatically start its onboard petrol generator for about 10 minutes, which typically provides 12–18 hours of additional 12V runtime. This happens automatically and safely.
In short: If you’re camping, touring, or driving every couple of days, your 12V accessories will run continuously without issue. For longer periods with no driving or charging (7+ days), this may not be the suitable solution however for caravan setups that will take charge from floating 12v supply, this would also keep your carvan topped off even while stopped using traction battery power from your BYD SHARK 6. This is now also compatible with DENZA B5 and B8.
Our Long-Term Test Results
We’ve been testing this setup in our own BYD Shark since January 2025, running a 45L 12V fridge and a Starlink Mini 24/7. After 13+ months of continuous use:
-
We have never had a flat 12V battery.
-
The high-voltage system has behaved normally in both EV and hybrid modes.
-
During overnight camping, the vehicle has occasionally started the petrol generator automatically for 10 minutes to top up — exactly as designed.
-
When using the Shark’s SAVE mode set to 30–35%, we found the system does not need to auto-start overnight at all, keeping 12V loads running without interruption.
- This has been tested on Shark with software version 2.1.0 and higher as at current as has worked since the first release software of the Shark in Feb 2025 to current date with no issues.
We’ve also installed this setup in several friends’ and family members’ Shark vehicles with identical results. We are fully confident in the long-term reliability of this modification.
Installation Options
-
DIY Kit: Full kit supplied with step-by-step instructions. Installation requires soldering two wires on the connection as the wires must pass through the factory Shark rubber grommets in bare form. For this reason this connection cannot be shipped pre-attached.
-
Professional Installation: Available at our workshop in Braeside, Victoria.
