Starlink's New $8.50 AUD Standby Mode with Unlimited Low Speed Data
As of August 2025, Starlink announced in Australia a new “Standby Mode”, also referred to as Free Pause, offering unlimited low-speed data for just $8.50 AUD per month — that’s roughly $0.29 per day. Users can upgrade to a full roaming service at any time if high-speed data is needed again.
In our own independent testing, Standby Mode performed better than expected. Although it’s advertised as being limited to around 500 kbps, we were still able to:
Use Google Maps
Make and receive phone calls
Send and receive text messages
Run Facebook Messenger and other basic communication apps
While some web pages load more slowly, overall performance was surprisingly capable for the price.
If you know you won’t be using your Starlink connection for a while, this mode offers a flexible and low-cost alternative. You can cancel anytime and reactivate later at no additional cost — ideal for off-seasons, storage periods, or infrequent travel.
